The Role of Prescription Opioids in Heroin Addiction

At our Colorado heroin addiction treatment center, many patients arrive having developed a heroin addiction after inadvertently becoming addicted to prescription opioids.

Individuals given a prescription opioid painkiller are 19 times more likely to eventually use heroin.

When an individual develops a dependency on opioids, once their prescription runs out or they can’t obtain another, they turn to heroin to fill the void.

Although illegal, heroin is much cheaper and easier to acquire than prescription opioids. Unfortunately, heroin’s potency far exceeds that of other opioids.

Thus, when an individual begins using heroin, their dependency deepens, and it becomes even more difficult to break the addiction.

There are several treatment options available for those undergoing recovery. Each program is part of a continuum of care and our admissions staff can help you determine which level of treatment is right for you.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

This is our highest level of care.

PHP typically provides 30-days of treatment with recovery residences for adults suffering from mental health, complex trauma, and substance use disorders.

Our programs are individuals and the PHP stay may be a little shorter or a few days longer.

You’ll begin by structure 25-30 hours of group therapy per week, and weekly individual sessions focused on mental health and trauma-based therapies.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

IOP offers patients the flexibility to continue work or family obligations while getting treatment.

Our Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program provides up to 60-days of treatment for adults suffering from mental health, complex trauma, and substance use disorders.

AspenRidge Day IOP consists of 15 hours of group therapy per week and weekly individual therapy session focused on mental health and addiction recovery.

Outpatient Treatment

Usually, this type of treatment is for individuals who have already gone through an IOP or inpatient program.

Rarely do patients new to recovery begin with this program.

This level of care can be up to 180 days and about 5 hours of therapy per week.

Alumni Support

Once an individual completes treatment, they still may need help transitioning back to their everyday life.

Our alumni support program helps clients stay true to their sobriety by offering resources and community support from peers.

By providing a full continuum of care, our patients are able to slowly transition back into their community with the necessary support.
