Different Types of Drug Treatment | Rehab for Alcohol & Drugs
types of addiction support

Substance abuse and addiction, like any disease, varies from person to person on its effects and symptoms. The greatest risk individuals face with substance use is the possibility of dependence. Determining the right level of care with different types of drug treatment available today can be tricky. Below we’re reviewing the multiple treatment options and how they can be tailored for the individual’s needs.

Drug use at any level can be dangerous. With excessive or ongoing consumption, they can harm the brain and body, sometimes permanently. It can also hurt the people around you, including friends, families, and coworkers. Drugs can also lead to addiction, which significantly impacts health and everyday life. Individualized Substance Abuse Treatment

substance abuse treatmentSubstance abuse treatment specialists and medical researchers understand that a one-size-fits-all approach is no longer an effective approach to addressing long-term care and sobriety. Better results are possible with tailored treatment models that address individual characteristics, risk exposure, and types of substances used.

Less severe addiction may benefit from outpatient treatment that imposes minimal restrictions on everyday life. This allows a person to receive substance abuse care while maintaining routines and other obligations. On the other hand, more advanced addiction may require inpatient treatment or hospitalization. Here’s a rundown of the different types of drug treatment a person may consider when seeking help.

Tailored Treatment

Personalized plans are developed based on the most successful pathway to sobriety. This is determined by an initial evaluation that assesses the best approach for a favorable outcome.

Unfortunately, drug addiction never occurs in the same manner and can be impacted by various factors. For this reason, treatment specialists agree that effective care begins by evaluating basic and long-term needs. Using various information such as:

  • Genetics
  • Lifestyle
  • Environment
  • Substance(s) used
  • Underlying mental health or trauma

Addiction professionals can better determine a treatment plan that can provide effective recovery tools.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 40 to 60 percent of a person’s predisposition to drug or alcohol addiction comes from genetics. However, genes alone are not enough to determine substance dependency. Social and environmental factors also play a role. Knowing how to avoid these influences and triggers can assist many with overcoming addiction.

Addiction affects a person’s behavior and brain function, which makes it a complex disease. Yet, like other chronic health conditions, addiction is treatable. Below are the different types of drug treatment available.

Different Types of Drug Treatment

treatment for substance abuseTreatment for drug and alcohol addiction comes in various forms. It can include psychiatric services, medicine prescribed by a physician, and other therapeutic techniques like EMDR. Depending on preferences and needs, individuals and families can select among community group meetings, ongoing counseling, prescribed medications, and even hospitalization. Research shows that the best chance of success is utilizing a combination of these treatment approaches.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.2 million U.S. adults experienced mental illness and a substance use disorder in 2018. The best treatment for dual diagnosis is an integrated intervention, where a person receives care for both their diagnosed mental illness and substance use disorder.

Here are different types of drug treatment options available:

Detoxification

For initial sobriety, detoxification is usually the safest method for stopping the use of alcohol or drugs. During alcohol or benzo detoxification, a trained medical professional monitors a person day and night for up to a week. Medical staff may administer tapering amounts of the substance or its medical alternative to help lessen withdrawal effects. Drug withdrawal may include a combination of dangerous physical, mental, and emotional symptoms, which licensed and trained medical professionals must oversee detox.

Abstaining from drug use can result in large fluctuations in brain chemicals and cause mental and physical health impacts. Medication prescribed during detoxification may be required while transitioning to continuing care programs. Trained addiction specialists can help with monitoring and managing medication during rehabilitation.

While AspenRidge doesn’t offer a detox facility at our treatment center, we partner with some of Colorado’s best detox centers. Our staff coordinates with these centers directly so that when detox is completed, you can transition more seamlessly into our various treatment programs.

Inpatient Rehabilitation

There are many different types of drug treatment, but residential care is one of the most well known. Inpatient rehab typically offers the highest level of care for individuals who are seeking drug and alcohol treatment. Inpatient treatment is usually very structured, offering a safe space for individuals to recover from the chaos that surrounds SUD.

Depending on the facility selected and amenities, activities and format of inpatient care will vary. However, most inpatient programs address severe addiction. Usually, following detox, individuals can still receive hospitalization support. Through a 12-step program and therapist-led group therapy, we provide a support system for ongoing sobriety. It also addresses patterned behavior and works to uncover triggers that may impact overall success. It can also incorporate other treatment modalities such as:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Family Therapy
  • Holistic care like yoga, art therapy, exercising, and much more

Residential treatment immerses clients in rehabilitation care to help more individuals find the tools needed to maintain a drug-free lifestyle. Programs vary, but most can select 30, 60, or 90-day residential care. However, due to the high cost of in-house treatment and the commitment that can impact outside obligations, residential treatment is not always the most accessible.

Other continuing care programs can help target clients who cannot meet the demands of a full in-house commitment. Speak with a treatment provider to discuss different treatments and choose an option that fits an individual’s needs.

Partial Hospitalization Treatment

Partial Hospitalization Program (Day Program) is part of a continuing care model. A formal mental health and substance abuse evaluation can help licensed experts determine if Day Program is the correct approach.

Partial Hospitalization Programs are designed for people who may meet the following criteria:

  • Difficulty functioning at work, school, or other occupations
  • Not at risk of harming self or others
  • Medically stable
  • Has adequate support at home
  • Motivated to participate in treatment
  • Experiencing co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders

In general, Day Program entails psychiatric services like ongoing therapy in both group and individual settings. It also involves skill building practices, family therapy or support, medication management, evaluation, and progress updates. It can also incorporate other treatment approaches like meditation, neurofeedback therapy, life skills training, and trauma therapy. Due to its integrative care, Day Program is highly effective for long-term sobriety.

Individuals may choose Day Program after detoxification or residential treatment. Alternatively, they may enter treatment at the Day Program level.

Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient care is typically the step-down from partial hospitalization. It can incorporate intensive outpatient care (5-Day IOP) or outpatient care (OP). An outpatient rehab program can be beneficial for individuals who suffer from mild to moderate substance abuse problems in need of aid. In general, outpatient programs focus on counseling, education, and creating a support network during the transition.

5-Day IOP and OP incorporate group and individual counseling. 5-Day IOP offers sober living options, whereas OP allows for the flexibility of clients returning home after receiving treatment. Levels of commitment will differentiate between both, but each allows for more flexibility than residential care or partial hospitalization care.

Benefits of Outpatient Treatment:

  • Affordability
  • Accessibility
  • Effective

Self Help and Support Groups

Different types of drug treatment options make recovery easier. Resources for addiction treatment are becoming more widely available in local communities. Well-known support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and other 12-step programs help with long-term abstinence. Science-based, self-empowered recovery group SMART Recovery is also an option for individuals.

Support groups allow members to share frustrations, celebrate successes, find referrals for specialists, and more.

Medications

different types of drug treatmentIt’s an antiquated belief that using medications to help with addiction means trading one substance for another. Science-based research has discovered that certain medications can aid in withdrawal and help those in recovery stay sober. Vivitrol, for example, has been known to treat alcohol abuse and methadone for opiate addiction.

Some medications can offer potentially life-saving solutions and alleviate health issues caused by substance abuse. Many medications that address substance dependency have been approved for treatment by the FDA. These treatments are referred to as medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and integrated with different treatment programs.

Research shows that MAT is clinically proven to help prevent relapses and overdoses. Overall, MAT reduces the death rate among individuals suffering from addiction by 50% or more.

While we do not provide new MAT prescriptions, you can continue your existing MAT regime while receiving treatment from AspenRidge Recovery.

Online Treatment

Through different types of drug treatment, clients may gain more access to critical services for long-term success. Technology helps develop new approaches to affordable and effective care.

The same treatment types listed above, aside from residential programs, can be made available through telehealth services. While still relatively new, studies have revealed that online access programs are just as effective as in-person treatment. Online options can incorporate group and individual therapies on a daily or weekly basis. They can provide holistic care and ongoing support to help clients successfully manage substance dependency. It’s also another way to build a supportive network for continuing care.
